If nothing else, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy provides a fascinating insight into human perceptions. There are highly intelligent people who insist that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone and that it’s borderline delusional to have any other opinion. And then there are people like me who believe that it is so obviously a conspiracy, that the only reason people could believe otherwise is because they know none of the facts and trust their government. Somebody is drastically wrong, but whom? And how can we explain the cognitive dissonance?
Recently I read an article by John Nolte, the editor of Big Hollywood. The article was about Oliver Stone’s magnum opus, JFK. Nolte, like me, loves the movie but, unlike me, doesn’t believe any of the conspiracy. Here he comments on Gerald Posner’s Case Closed, which many consider the definitive book proving Oswald’s guilt:
“Case Closed”is a great read that also happens to be painstakingly thorough in proving that on one terrible November day in 1963, President John F. Kennedy was murdered by a lone, left-wing, Castro-supporting Marxist.
I have great respect for Mr. Nolte and he seems relatively informed about the JFK assassination. So it befuddles me that I am analyzing the same information that he is and yet I couldn’t disagree more. So for Mr. Nolte, and others who believe in Oswald’s lone guilt, I have the following questions (questions in bold must be answered or they absolutely prove conspiracy):
Can any witness place Oswald on the 6th Floor of the Depository during the shooting. Is there any other evidence placing him there?
How do you explain that Oswald was found in the 2nd Floor cafeteria less than 90 seconds after the shooting when he could not have taken either the elevator or stairs?
Why were Oswald’s prints not found on the Mannlicher-Carcano until after his murder when a palm print was found?
How did Oswald test negative on the paraffin test?
Why did doctors in Dallas note an entrance would to Kennedy’s throat and an entrance would to the right temple with a massive exit wound in the rear of the skull?
How was Officer Bobby Hargis splattered with blood and brain tissue when he was to the rear of Kennedy?
Why was Governor Connally’s suit sent to the cleaners rather than being submitted as evidence?
Why was the limousine destroyed.
When Dallas Police rushed to the grassy knoll, who was the man who flashed a Secret Service identification after being questioned? There were no agents on foot in the Plaza.
Why did Jack Ruby murder Oswald?
How could one bullet cause seven wounds and still be in pristine condition?
If Oswald was a legitimate defector to the Soviet Union, rather than an intelligence agent, how do you account for the following:
- Before defecting, why was he trained in the Russian language at Atsuga Air Force Base?
- Since he had access to confidential military information, why was he not arrested and prosecuted for treason after returning from the Soviet Union?
- Why was his return trip to the U.S. paid for by the State Department?
- How did he retain his U.S. citizenship after defecting?
And finally, do you think Oswald would have been convicted if he had lived? Based on what evidence?
I am left scratching my head how a rational person can still not believe in a conspiracy. If you agree with Mr. Nolte, feel free to enlighten me.
